Orlando is getting Cool(er). All the time.
Putting Orlando on the map when it comes to our tech and creative scene is a number one priority for many of us. At IgniteOrlando Greg Rollet talked about how Orlando is using Social Media to do it. One part show and tell, and two parts call to action. We love Orlando. And it shows.
Ignite Orlando
IgniteOrlando is an event that couples rapid-fire talks with a ‘maker’project. This event started in Seattle, but takes place around the globe. The talks last 5 minutes and consist of 20 slides that are automatically rotated every 15 seconds. As you can imagine this places some interesting limits on that kind of presentation you can put together. As you probably know, limits have an uncanny knack of making you more creative.
Tomorrow night is Orlando’s first Ignite event, and once you take a gander at the line-up (yours truly included), and I think you’ll agree that we are in for one hell of a show. If you haven’t RSVP’d for the event, do so now. If you have, then I’ll see you tomorrow night at 6pm!
Location:
Slingapours, Wall Street Plaza (downtown)

OrlandoPHP: WordPress Plugin Development
OrlandoPHP is the monthly user group meet up for PHP programmers in the greater Central Florida area. February’s meeting is tonight and I have the privledge of sharing my WordPress plugin development knowledge with the group as the first of tonight’s presenters.
Its a 30 minute talk so I plan on covering the basics of plugin development, where to get help, how I organize my plugin’s assets and will round it out by showing you how to add ajax functionality to your plugin (with jQuery of course!)
The fun starts at 7pm (Thursday, February 5th) at Stardust in Winter Park. There are still some spots open, so you should probably head over to the site and RSVP.
If you can’t make it, I will post my slides here afterwards.

Orlando’s First Coworking Space is Starting to Materialize
Here’s some exciting news on the Orlando Coworking front. CoLab Orlando is on the verge of opening in the historic Angebilt building at Orange and Wall St. Etan Horowitz at the Orlando Sentinel got a tour of it today and posted a pretty thorough piece on it. They plan to open it to the general public in September and looks like it might be $250 per month to set up permanent shop in the space. Day passes will likely be $25, but all the prices are still up in the air.
Until then, there’s the Coworking Orlando list, and the regular tuesday coworking at Stardust.
Florida Creatives 10th Happy Hour Photos
I had a great time, and got to know some interesting people a little better, and left generally inspired and fired up for what we can create as a group.
Thanks goes out to Ryan Price for organizing it and everyone who attended for contributing to great vibe of the event. We really do have a great community going. I’m happy to be a part of it.
Next time we just need better music.

Co-Working
One of the topics that really stood out for me at BarCamp Orlando, was Co-Working. Co-working is basically sharing a space with other freelancers, independents, telecommuters, mobile works, and other work-at-home types to foster a sense of community around the work that you do.
