A big thing is the ability to do consulting work as needed, especially if you’re either hourly or work with a company that doesn’t do much overtime, makes it easier to fix financial problems, etc.
I totally agree, and fits in nicely with the advice from the article about keeping your skills sharp… nothing like working for clients directly to push yourself to new heights (provided you seek out challenging gigs).
